Even Indoor Cats Can Get Fleas

You may think your cat will never become dinner for fleas but a surprising number of indoor-only cats have problems. Since cats are fastidious groomers, the fleas may go unnoticed until you see your cat doing lots of scratching or you notice some hair loss due to bite allergies. If you have a dog who goes outside, even if he's on flea prevention he stands of chance of being a flea taxi. You can also bring fleas in on your pants or socks. Another way they gain access is through the window screen, especially if your cat enjoys sitting by a first-floor window. To do a flea check, place your cat on a white towel and brush. If you see black specks (flea debris) then it's time to your vet about protection.

Helping a Scaredy Cat Adjust to Visitors

Begin training sessions by having someone come over quietly and sit on the floor without making eye contact with your cat. The visitor should engage in quiet conversation with you. Don't hold your cat or encourage him to go up to the person. Cats feel less threatened when they have some degree of freedom and control. Engage the cat in an interactive play session with a fishing pole toy or offer treats while in the presence of the visitor. If things go well you can have the visitor begin gently tossing treats to the cat. If kitty isn't ready for this step then work up to that in later sessions. The point of this training is to have the cat associate something positive with the presence of the visitor.

Why You Should Separate a Cat's Food and Water

You may think you're making life easier for your cat by using a double dish for food and water but some cats don't like water so close to their meal. In between meals when a cat goes for some water she may not want the smell of food nearby. Food particles that spill into the water can also contaminate it. If you feed dry food and some water spills into it, that can make the food less palatable. If you use separate dishes you're also more inclined to keep the bowls cleaner. With a double feeder that still contains dry food you may just refill the water side without washing it. If you're concerned about your cat not drinking enough, try using a separate water dish and place it away from the food bowl.

Does it really take longer to potty train boys than girls?

Yes, although no one, including expert T. Berry Brazelton, seems to know why. In her book Toilet Learning, Alison Mack says the difference may be partially due to the fact that moms are usually the primary potty-trainers in a family. Boys without a male role model to imitate in the bathroom may take a little longer to get the idea, while girls have the advantage of observing someone with the same equipment.

Even if Dad is equally involved, boys sometimes need more time than girls, possibly because it's a two-step process for them. First they learn to pee and poop sitting down, then they have to master part of the act while standing up.

If your son takes longer to train than the girls in his daycare, don't sweat it. Just be sure to watch for readiness signs and go from there.
Should my son pee standing up from the start?

Since bowel movements and urine tend to come out all at the same time, it makes sense to have your 2-year-old sit for both. This way, he learns that both pee and poop belong in the potty. Plus, the thrill of learning to aim and spray won't distract him from concentrating on mastering the basics.

When buying a potty chair for your son, look for one without a urine guard (or one you can remove). While such a shield might protect your bathroom linoleum from a few stray drops, it also can bump into and scrape your son's penis, causing him to associate going to the bathroom with pain.
How do I teach my son to pee standing up?

Once your child has mastered going to the bathroom sitting down, he can advance to trying the standing position. Having a readily available male role model is key. Arrange for your son to follow Dad, an uncle, or family friend to the bathroom to watch him in the act. When your son seems to understand how to do it, let him give it a go, perhaps into his own potty chair while standing next to the big toilet.

If he seems reluctant, try floating a few Cheerios or other small, flushable objects (some companies sell products just for this purpose) in the toilet bowl for target practice. Be prepared to do some cleanup around the toilet since it may take him some time to master the skill (practice makes perfect).

Child Craft Drop-Side Cribs Recalled Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Child Craft brand drop-side cribs

Manufacturer: Child Craft Industries, Inc. (Child Craft ceased operations in July of 2009 and sold the “Child Craft” name to Foundations Worldwide Inc., of Medina, Ohio) Foundations Worldwide, Inc. neither manufactured nor sold any of the cribs included in this recall.

Units: Unknown

Hazard: The drop-side hardware can fail, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib or fall to the dropped position. When the drop side detaches, even partially, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. Drop side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and with age related wear and tear. Additionally, when drop-side hardware fails and/or disengages, an infant or toddler can be injured by falling out of the crib.

Incidents: CPSC has received seven reports of the drop side failing. In one of those reports, the child became entrapped in the gap created by the drop-side failure. In another incident, a child fell out of the crib and suffered bruises to his head when the drop side disengaged.

Description: This recall involves drop-side Child Craft brand cribs using the style of drop-side hardware shown below. “Child Craft” appears on a label on the crib’s frame and identifies the place of manufacture as Salem, Indiana or New Salisbury, Indiana.

Although Foundations Worldwide did not manufacture or sell any of the recalled cribs, it has agreed to provide Child Craft owners with a rebate towards the purchase of a new, fixed-side Child Craft brand crib manufactured by Foundations Worldwide Inc.

Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Disengagements can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib. Babies have died in cribs where repairs were attempted by caregivers. Age is factor in the safety of any crib. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you not use a crib that is older than 10 years. Many older cribs may not meet current voluntary standards and can have numerous safety problems.

McDonald's recalls 12 million Shrek-themed drinking glasses containing cadmium in paint job

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Cadmium has been discovered in the painted design on "Shrek"-themed drinking glasses being sold nationwide at McDonald's, forcing the burger giant to recall 12 million of the cheap U.S.-made collectibles while dramatically expanding contamination concerns about the toxic metal beyond imported children's jewelry.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early Friday, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses; McDonald's said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.
The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie "Shrek Forever After," were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.
In the animated comedy, which debuted May 21 as the latest installment of the successful DreamWorks Animation franchise, the voice of Shrek is performed by Mike Myers of "Austin Powers" fame, Cameron Diaz performs as Princess Fiona, Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots and Eddie Murphy voices Donkey. The movie has been No. 1 at the box office since its release.
The CPSC noted in its recall notice that "long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects." Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.
In the case of the Shrek-themed glassware, the potential danger would be long-term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which could leach from the paint onto a child's hand, then enter the body if the child puts that unwashed hand to his or her mouth.
Cadmium can be used to create reds and yellows in paint. McDonald's USA spokesman Bill Whitman said a pigment in paint on the glasses contained cadmium.
"A very small amount of cadmium can come to the surface of the glass, and in order to be as protective as possible of children, CPSC and McDonald's worked together on this recall," said CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson. He would not specify the amounts of cadmium that leached from the paint in tests, but said the amounts were "slightly above the protective level currently being developed by the agency."
Wolfson said the glasses have "far less cadmium than the children's metal jewelry that CPSC has previously recalled."
Concerns about cadmium exposure emerged in January, when The Associated Press reported that some items of children's jewelry sold at major national chains contained up to 91 percent of the metal. Federal regulators worry that kids could ingest cadmium by biting, sucking or even swallowing contaminated pendants and bracelets.
The consumer protection agency has issued three recalls this spring for jewelry highlighted in the AP stories, including products sold at Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer; at Claire's, a major jewelry and accessories chain in North America and Europe ; and at discount and dollar stores.
Those recalls all involved children's metal jewelry -- and all of that jewelry was made in China .
Manufactured by ARC International of Millville, N.J., the glasses were to be sold from May 21 into June. Roughly seven million of the glasses had been sold; another approximately five million are in stores or have not yet been shipped, said Whitman.
Associated Press reporters tried unsuccessfully to buy the glasses late Thursday at McDonald's in New York , Los Angeles and northern New Jersey but were alternately told the merchandise was sold out, no longer available or "there'll be more tomorrow."
The company that makes the drinking glasses said it only learned of the problem late Thursday and will look into it. Tom Reed, vice president of human resources at Arc International's plant in Millville , N.J. , said the company received a copy of a McDonald's memo on the recall but has not heard anything else.
Reed would not say where the paint was made or whether it's used in Arc's other products. Arc is based in France and owns the Pyrex brand of cookware in Europe .
McDonald's said it was asking customers to stop using the glasses "out of an abundance of caution."
"We believe the Shrek glassware is safe for consumer use," Whitman said. "However, again to ensure that our customers receive safe products from us, we made the decision to stop selling them and voluntarily recall these products effective immediately."
Whitman said that as the CPSC develops new protocols and standards for cadmium in consumer products, "we adjust as necessary to ensure that our customers can continue to trust what they receive from McDonald's."
Federal scrutiny of the glasses began last week. The Washington office of U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, a California Democrat who has proposed strictly limiting cadmium in jewelry, received what a spokesman described as an anonymous tip that testing with an X-ray gun that estimates how much cadmium an item contains indicated the metal was present in the glass paint. Speier's office requested samples of the glasses from the tipster, and upon receiving them May 27 sent them to the CPSC for further investigation.
"Our children's health should not depend on the consciences of anonymous sources," Speier said in a statement Friday. "Although McDonald's did the right thing by recalling these products, we need stronger testing standards to ensure that all children's products are proven safe before they hit the shelves."

Another Children's Medicine Recall: Four PediaCare Products

Blacksmith Brands, Inc., in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is voluntarily recalling all lots of four children’s products in the PediaCare line. These products are sold exclusively in the United States. These products were manufactured for Blacksmith Brands by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a Division of McNeil-PPC, Inc., (a Johnson & Johnson Company) at McNeil’s Fort Washington, PA plant.

The four PediaCare items involved in the recall are:
1. PediaCare Multi-Symptom Cold 4oz. UPC # 3 0045-0556-05 9
2. PediaCare Long Acting Cough 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0465-04 7
3. PediaCare Decongestant 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0554-04 8
4. PediaCare Allergy and Cold 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0552-04 4

Blacksmith Brands initiated the recall as a precautionary step because the products were made at the McNeil Consumer Healthcare Fort Washington, PA plant that has been temporarily shut down. A recent FDA inspection at that facility found serious problems in meeting the FDA’s current good manufacturing practice requirements. The recall was not initiated as a result of any consumer reports of adverse events and no consumer complaints have been received about the safety or purity of the products.

While the recall was not initiated as a result of either any consumer reports of adverse events or complaints with respect to the PediaCare products, tiny particles have been found in other non-PediaCare products which were manufactured at the McNeil plant.

While the potential for serious medical events is remote, the company advises consumers who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use. Blacksmith Brands is asking Retail and Wholesale customers to withdraw the four products from their shelves and warehouses and return the product to Blacksmith Brands.

To provide these valued products to consumers again as quickly as possible, Blacksmith Brands has arranged to make them at new manufacturing plants and expects to resume shipments of the recalled items in July from those new facilities.

Items not involved in this recall are PediaCare Allergy 4oz., PediaCare Gentle Vapors Plug in Units, and PediaCare Gentle Vapors refills, all of which are produced in other facilities.

When I opened the nail polish remover I was very surprised that the odor was not strong like most nail polish removers.
